RootArray

 

The RootArray provides unprecedented insight into the dynamics of gene expression within plant roots. It allows for a detailed and comprehensive analysis of gene expression in real-time. The RootArray consists of a multi-well plate that holds dozens of seedlings in a defined growth medium. Its design allows us to monitor the gene expression in 3 dimensions within the plant root over time. Moreover, the system permits introduction of different nutrients and chemicals into the growing chamber to determine their effect on gene expression and plant development.

The RootArray uses green fluorescent proteins (GFP) as reporters of gene transcription. When the gene is transcribed, the GFP protein is expressed and can generate a visible green fluorescence.This can be observed through a confocal laser scanning microscope. The result is a detailed map and time sequence of gene expression. The RootArray system enables us to monitor the expression of 100 times more genes than current techniques allow. From this data we can determine the optimal genetic or chemical manipulations that will affect desired traits within the plant.
