Biofuels

Rising fuel prices and uncertain supply have created enormous opportunities for the development of alternative fuels. Switchgrass is one of the most promising of the alternative fuel feedstocks being developed. One key to the success of switchgrass as a renewable energy source is the improvement of the crop to make it a more efficient fuel source.

GrassRoots Biotechnology is working to create enhanced switchgrass crops. We are focusing on two important switchgrass traits: rapid root establishment and greater root extension. The slow rate of switchgrass root establishment can delay harvest for up to three years. Rapid root establishment will speed the time to harvest. Greater root extension will increase the amount of carbon sequestration. This will provide switchgrass farmers added revenue in carbon credits and increase the value of switchgrass beyond simple biomass production.

We will employ a genome-wide approach to identify the genes responsible for rapid root establishment and root extension. Identification of markers associated with and conditions conducive to rapid root establishment and carbon sequestration will assist breeding for improving these traits.
